Building a Spiritually Intelligent Organization One Leader at a Time

A new online retreat that provides the missing pieces for 21st century leaders!

Spiritual Intelligence training provides next-level ways to thrive and lead in the midst of an increasingly complex world. Our workshop is designed to introduce an entirely new skill-set that can become part of your enlightened leadership style.

What is Spiritual Intelligence?

Contrary to its name, spiritual intelligence doesn't always imply a theological or religious bias to its study and practice. It's true definition is more intangible, especially as it relates to the working world we live in. While there are many definitions for Spiritual Intelligence, often referred to as SQ, the one we prefer using on this site and in our workshops comes directly from the author and developer of the SQ21 Assessment...

Spiritual Intelligence is the ability to behave with wisdom and compassion while maintaining inner and outer peace regardless of the situation."

- Cindy Wigglesworth

How is the Notion of Spiritual intelligence Related to Effective Leadership Behavior?

We are in the habit of thinking of intelligence solely in terms of mental acuity and rational thinking. However, over the past few decades a number of different types of intelligence have been identified in addition to the commonly accepted definition, the cognitive, describing "how smart you are."

A recently identified skill set now includes Spiritual Intelligence to the list. Spiritual Intelligence, or SQ, represents our moral and ethical behavior; it is like a internal GPS system that guides our behavior whether dealing with our work, or our building relationships with others. You can begin to see how important it is for anyone in a leadership capacity, to want to develop this intelligence in order to enhance their effectiveness and achieve better results and better relationships with those they are leading.

All of us have the capacity to be Spiritually Intelligent, our success in doing so depends on our level of commitment. Like every other intelligence, it takes a clear understanding of "what it is" and how one can access and develop it. Cindy Wigglesworth, who after over a decade of research and validation studies created the SQ21 Assessment that identifies 21 behavioral skills related to Spiritual Intelligence. These skills can be further developed in a practical way, taking the mystery out of "spiritual" and making it more practical and achievable. This assessment serves as the foundation of our workshops and our Spiritual Intelligence coaching practice.

By understanding and cultivating these 21 Skills, and more skills may be identified in the future, you can greatly enhance your overall leadership behavior. Most contemporary leadership theory focuses on task accomplishment, interpersonal relationships and teamwork skills with very few to date that focuses on the Complete set of Skills for the Spiritually Intelligent Leader, one who is prepared to meet the ever changing challenges of the 21st century. A leader for this century knows that to be truly effective and successful, they will need to "tap into" their SQ skills, as well!

The SQ21 Assessment

Whether we are religious believers or not, it turns out we can agree quite easily on what it means to be a spiritually evolved human being. The more difficult questions concern... how we get there? How do we measure our progress?

The professional benefits of IQ and EQ have been developed and incorporated into workplace cultures. New research from the Harvard Business School illustrates the emergence of a higher form of leadership in some organizations that display skills of wisdom, compassion, humility and courage.

SQ21 is a "faith neutral" instrument meaning we do not rely on language of any faith tradition. We seek to use generic words for concepts whenever possible. Because as individuals we come from so many viewpoints, one word is rarely enough to communicate clearly to everyone.

We will never dictate to you what you must believe or how you must act. We use the instrument as a tool for self-learning and reflection and a possible aid to your own leadership journey. Ultimately only you and you alone can decide what you believe and which skills you want to develop.

Some important considerations about taking the SQ21 instrument:

There are no "minimum skill" requirements - you decide where you want to be on each skill. If you scored at level 3 in a skill, you may find that this level of skill development is sufficient. Spiritual growth is a personal choice and each of us must decide when we are ready and how far we want to grow.

There are 21 skills described by this assessment. We do not claim that this is an exhaustive list of all possible skills. These 21 skills do seem to represent the common threads among the major faith traditions, modern psychology, and among many philosophers and spiritual writers. There may be skills not listed in this report that are important in your faith tradition. And there may be some skills listed that you don’t feel are important. We invite you to "adjust" the report accordingly. If you feel a skill is not important then you would not need to consider any "next steps" recommended in that section of the report. If your chosen faith tradition emphasizes a skill not listed in our assessment, then of course you should consider pursuing the development of that skill.

Most people will not develop ALL 21 skills to a high level. Eventually we hope to demonstrate by statistical analysis any minimum skills or levels needed to create a "tipping point" - the point at which the foundational skills are sufficiently developed to lead to Spiritually Intelligent behavior.
